No picnic on Mt.Kenya: An Italian prisoner of war in equatorial East Africa recounts his escape from a British POW camp so that he might climb the 17,000-foot peak of Mount Kenya. And then break back in!! Not exactly how an escape story should end but this is NOT an escape story but a story about those who set their goals higher to inner freedom and to try something thought to be fooldhardy- extremely captivating book.
“At such moments it was the thought of the security offered by a regular even though an unpleasant life, the spirit which dooms the canary bird to its caged existence, a natural tendency to follow the line of least resistance, that predominated. On the other hand, standing in the ranks at morning roll call and seeing Batian beckoning me with its shimmering glaciers, I sometimes felt like running away on the spot, to seek and to meet adventure halfway. We poor mortals are made like this, a mixture of contrasts, shade and light, fears and exaltations.”
The Safari companion: The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. In addition, useful maps show the major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks relevant to the guide. The book includes an extensive glossary, as well as tips on wildlife photography, a list of organizations working to protect African wildlife, and advice on where and when to see the animals.
A History of the East African Coast: The people of the coast, the Swahili, have experienced a rich and tumultuous history, coloured by political intrigue, international commerce, warfare, invasion, scandal and terrorism. Drawing on archaeology, the civic chronicles of the Swahili towns and accounts of the coast written by explorers, traders, missionaries and colonialists from as far afield as Italy, China and Britain, this book tells the story of the East African coast from ancient times to today. Moving from the slave markets and clove plantations of Zanzibar, to the stone towns and sand dunes of the Lamu Archipelago, to the fight for control of Mombasa and its great bastion, Fort Jesus, it tells the stories of Zanzibari sultans, Swahili merchants, Portuguese explorers and Christian missionaries in an epic history stretching back more than two thousand years
Also just for general knowledge, these are some of the flicks set in Kenya: Lion King, I dreamed of Africa, Out of Africa, The White Maasai, White Mischief, Nowhere in Africa. These can also be purchased in paperback.
